Selva Ski Holiday Resort
Overview
Selva is deservedly one of Italy's best known resorts as it offers Tyrolean charm and breathtaking scenery as well as being set in the heart of Europe's largest interconnected ski area - the famous Dolomiti Superski. There is an unbeatable quantity of skiing right on your doorstep making it a paradise for intermediate skiers, but the challenge for experts will be to put as many kilometres as possible under your skis!
Selva is a good value family resort where beginners can enjoy excellent gentle nursery slopes on both sides of the valley. After a few days the long well groomed runs at Col Raiser can be enjoyed. It is possible to reasonably circumnavigate the Sella Ronda in a day (a 26km route across some of the best slopes and most efficient lifts in the Dolomites). Natural snowfall has been excellent over the last few seasons and they also have excellent snowmaking facilities so there is never a threat to snow conditions. For boarders Selva offers an excellent terrain park & a couple of half-pipes. The whole area is stunning & there are some beautiful trails from which cross-country skiers can enjoy the views.
For many years this area was part of Austria, and it retains a Tirolean charm. German is more widely spoken than Italian, and many visitors are German, too. Expect to find food and architecture more typical of Austria than of Italy..
Offslope/apres ski
There are quite a few good mountain huts that non-skiers can access which enables them to meet with skiers for lunch. There’s snow-shoeing, tobogganing, sleigh rides and a sports centre in resort, and there are many spectacular walks on offer. Apres-ski is good value, plentiful and relatively informal. Further a field, Innsbruck is within reach by car/bus, and nearby Ortisei is worth a visit.
