Sauze d'Oulx

Overview

Many people remember the 1980's when Sauze d'Oulx had a reputation for being Benidorm on snow with the accompanying behaviour. Those days are no more, it has a Italian feel to it especially at weekends when the skiers from Turin arrive. The town centre is still a place of plenty of bars and clubs catering for the UK apres ski market but maybe with a little more class. The village centre is quite an attractive place but once away from this area it does spread into a bit of a sprawl.

The main parts of the town are served by the Clotes chair or the Sportina both of which can be a steep uphill walk from the accommodation, there is a resort bus service that is free with the lift pass.

The ski area provides excellent intermediate skiing with some really lovely cruisey runs to suit all levels of intermediate skiers. There is a large amount of terrain and with the full area pass it is possible to explore the western fringes of the ski area including the resorts of Sansicario and Claviere and also with links into the French resort of Montgenevre. The ski area is often referred to as the Milky Way.

For beginners there are better resorts, but the nursery area above the town reached by the Sportina lift has a moving carpet and a reasonable beginners ski area.

Experts will enjoy the off piste in the Milky Way and should only ever be attempted with a local guide and the correct equipment.

Positive

  • Extensive uncrowded slopes
  • Linked to the Milky way
  • Good nightlife
  • Relatively inexpensive

Negative

  • Crowded at weekends
  • Erratic snow records
  • Steep village and inadequate buses
  • Few challenging pistes

Offslope/apres ski

Excellent fun resort with a large array of bars, clubs and pubs for those looking for apres fun. An important consideration for clients to take into account is that Italy offers much better value for money than alot of the large well known French and Austrian resorts, so a night out is going to be much much cheaper.

The Bar Miravallino is a firm favourite with regulars to Sauze with different attractions on offer each night of the week.

Our View

Great resort for those looking for value for money skiing, in a great linked ski area and some excellent apres ski.
