Val Thorens Ski Holiday Resort
Overview
A purpose built resort high above the tree line, Val Thorens is more attractive than other purpose built resorts and has more high quality and attractive accommodation being built. Although supposedly traffic free, workers cars can still create a lot of traffic. It is compact resort with many apartment blocks facing slope-side giving the resort good ski accessibility from most places. It offers excellent and reliable snow cover. With a new and fast lift system, queues are very unusual. There are few bottlenecks and there are many moving carpets in resort for beginners.
The village is relatively small with a lot of ski in ski out properties. It is divided into two main parts with the upper half being the Place de Peclet, and the second part being the main chalet area of Plein Sud.
There is plenty of scope for beginners from the gentle beginner slopes at the foot of the resort and the easy blues above the village.
For intermediates the possibilities are endless with fantastic slopes immediately around the resort through to the easily accessed Three Valley network.
Experts will find few pisted runs in Val Thorens but will find plenty of off piste to enjoy. The season is long, with a start most years in November and going all the way through to May.
Offslope/apres ski
Val Thorens has a good selection of bars and clubs playing a wide variety of music. Bars include Rendez Vous, red Fox, Saloon, O'Connells, Shamrock pub, Downunder, and the ever famous Frog and Roastbeef. Malayasia and Klub Summit are two banging nightclubs. Then there is the Folie Douce........but why would you.
There is a wide and good selection of restaurants ranging from good value to very expensive. There is also a good selection of mountain restaurants to suit all tastes. Off the slopes is limited, other than a small sports centre and cinema.
