Summer skiing: Glaciers in Europe.
It’s Spring and its getting sunnier so it’s no surprise that we’re starting to think about summer here at Snowfinders…
Although summer isn’t usually the prime time for skiing, there are undoubtedly skiers out there who want their all year round ski hit. Therefore, for those who are interested, the following three areas are all perfect for summer skiing:
Zermatt, Switzerland
At Snowfinders, we often describe Zermatt as of the most stunning ski resorts in the world. Not only is it full of charm, as well as rich alpine tradition and history, the skiing is exceptional!
Towering over the resort is the majestic Matterhorn (“a proper mountain with a point on the top”) which only adds more attraction to the resort.
Zermatt has everything you want from a ski resort. Although, it has been described as busy in the past, a new lift system has helped with congestion. What’s more, the resort is fairly traffic free. That said, you will come across an electric taxi or two!
The skiing in Zermatt is fantastic and suitable for all abilities. Zermatt offers expert and intermediate skiers a huge amount of terrain to cover, as well as endless opportunities for off-piste skiing (with a local guide, of course).
Beginners are now catered for in all four sectors of the Zermatt area. The best is probably up on the Sunnega where there are three moving carpets and two tows.
What’s more, if you get an international pass, you can ski over into the Italian resort of Cervinia which offers some very flattering skiing for intermediates.
Finally, the après-ski in Zermatt is exciting, lively and different, for an all-round, happy ski experience.
Saas Fee
A beautiful resort, at Snowfinders, we call Saas Fee a delightful, Swiss “chocolate box” village. It is traffic free, featuring historic cobbled streets, and truly picturesque. What’s more, summer skiing is very popular in Saas Fee and international race teams are often seen there, sharpening their skills for the forthcoming season.
The resort is open all year round apart from May and early November when the ski lifts are shut for maintenance.
Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or expert skier, Saas Fee has something to suit you. Beginners are catered for with a great selection of nursery slopes and blue runs, and intermediates are blessed with a great selection of red and black runs. Experts may want to go off-piste with a local qualified guide.
A particular hotspot for snowboarders, Saas Fee has a fantastic half pipe and fun park.
Hintertux glacier, Austria
Renowned for its all-year round skiing, Hintertux Glacier is a perfect resort for summer skiing!
