Saalbach-Hinterglemm Ski Holiday Resort

Overview

Saalbach is a traditional attractive Austrian village joined to its neighbour of just 4 kms along the valley, Hinterglemm. Both offer convenient accommodation with great access to the skiing in this sunny location. Saalbach is an unusual Austrian resort in that it offers ski convenience with traditional village atmosphere. There are two modern fast lifts in the village centre where most of the accommodation is situated, so you get pretty Austrian village with French high altitude resort ski convenience. Hinterglemm the village has a more varied architectural style than the prettier Saalbach, although it's no ugly duckling. Both resorts have a selection of accommodation rather from 2 star pensions to 5 star hotels. This supern ski area will appeal greatly to intermediates with the slopes providing a circuit and a fast modern lift system, probably better than any other Austrian resort. The resorts of Leogang and now Fieberbrunn are connected to include over 270KM of piste on this vast network. Intermediates will regard this area as skiing heaven with the anticlockwise circuit of the entire valley well within the reach of even the "nervous intermediate". The runs down to the resort of Leogang are a particular favourite of ours with some of the best snow in the resort found on this side of the mountain. Experts will probably find little to excite them on the "Ski Circus" but there are a few genuine black runs one of which is the Black from the top of the Schattberg gondola which can be a great blast down into the village of Saalbach. If snow conditions are favourable the off piste can be good and uncrowded. The nursery slopes in Saalbach are next to the centre of the village & Hinterglemm’s area for beginners is spacious and away from the main slopes. The whole area is a very good area to progress to and beginners will find many slopes to hone their new found skills. Apres ski in Saalbach is very lively and starts everywhere at around 4pm. A must for the first timer is the Hinterhag Alm where everyone is dancing and partying in their ski boots, when that finishes it`s ski back down to the resort to continue the party.

Offslope/apres ski

Known for their lively après ski, neither resort is for those looking for a quiet holiday. By the end of the afternoon most bars are busy & the entertainment continues on into the night. Most of the accommodation is in hotels offering full catering so there are not a lot of eateries but those there are offer good value & variety. Beyond skiing the resorts offer little to do and the shops are mainly those selling winter sports equipment or supermarkets.
