Hotel Astor, Selva

It doesn't get much more central than the Hotel Astor. Ran by the Pycha family for over 50 years, this traditional little hotel is spotlessly clean and about as convenient as you can get. 140m to the Nives drag lift which connects you to the main area, or if you can manage a little longer walk, it's pretty much flat so an easy 600m, the main gondola is just down the road. No drag lifts in sight. Getting off the slopes each afternoon the hotel is just back from the main après bars so you can enjoy all they have to offer before stumbling home to your own quiet little corner of Selva.

It's not going to win any sleek design awards, but the hotel is traditional, comfortable and a leap above your bargain basement ski abodes. The rooms are full of light wood and are naturally bright, glass divides and tasteful red and white check colour schemes keeps them looking fresh. Half the rooms have wooden flooring which we like the minimalist and more modern feel of, but you can still get carpeted rooms if you prefer that feel on your feet.

The wellness area is a real highlight with a Finnish sauna, a Turkish bath and a relaxation area centred around a stylish open fireplace. It's our favourite area of the hotel to while away a couple of hours, a relaxing après vibe. Though the bar and restaurant aren't bad spots either.

The nearest lift (Nives) is a drag lift so it's worth spending a few extra minutes making your way to the gondola – you'll be up the mountain much quicker.Underground parking is available at the hotel
