Bulgaria is generally seen as an ideal destination for ski and snowboarding beginners and intermediates looking for a budget holiday. It offers great value for money with cheap après-ski, excellent terrain, super friendly locals and extremely good local wine. The ski and snowboard schools have stellar reputations and partying costs a whole lot less. As do lift passes, ski school fees and equipment hire.

The most popular ski resorts in Bulgaria are Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. Borovets is the best place for beginners and aspiring intermediates, while Bansko, the largest ski area, has some good skiing to keep even the advanced skier happy.

Bansko boasts some particularly nice hotels which wouldn’t look out of place in some of Europe’s most glamorous resorts. The old town itself is beautiful with cobbled streets and stunning ancient architecture. The new town is particularly lively with bustling bars, nightclubs and restaurants; all completely easy on the wallet.

In the past, standards were known to be particularly poor in Bulgaria, with uninspiring food, small ski areas, ancient ski equipment and indifferent accommodation, though this has now changed, with massive investment in Eastern European resorts such as Bansko. There has been millions of euros spent on ski lifts and the restaurants are now actually very nice.

Borovets, like Bansko, is equally buzzy, and known to be one of Europe’s top party hot spots on the slopes. Positioned on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain, below the Balkan’s highest peak of Musala, this is the oldest and most popular ski resort in Bulgaria, offering 58km of skiing, spread across three unique ski centres, all linked by lifts from the centre. Sitnyakovo Central is the largest, with a mix of gentle, winding slopes, progressive pistes mixed in with a couple of hairy downhills. Markudjik is the highest altitude ski centre, with skiing up to 2,550m and the third is Yastrebets which many consider has the best slopes in Borovets and also features the Borosport Snow Park. Night skiing is also open here from 6-10pm every day.

Pamporovo, Bulgaria’s sunniest resort is a little bit gentler in terms of slopes and night life. Great for families and beginners, this lovely little resort is perfect for those wishing to get their confidence up on the wide, well-maintained pistes.

All in all, Bulgaria is a great choice for an all-encompassing ski holiday without the goggle steaming prices!

Accommodation Options for Bulgaria

More or less all the accommodation is hotel based and there is a large selection to choose from with the Kempiniski Grand Arena in Bansko at the top of the tree. The regular favourites are the Lion Hotel in Bansko and the Perelik Hotel in Pamporova.

One of the main reasons people go to Bulgaria skiing is the low costs of all the ancillaries that in the Alps will add a significant amount to the total spend. Lift passes are cheap as is equipment hire but probably the biggest draw for young groups is the low cost of après ski fun. The ski schools in most Bulgarian resorts offer excellent tuition for beginners and intermediates.
