How Do Skiing Holidays Work?

Skiing holidays centre around a stay in or near a popular resort. These can be popular European resorts like France, Switzerland, and Austria, or further afield, with plenty of resorts available in the US, Canada, and Japan.

Most resorts offer a network of runs, lodges, hotels, and private chalets, making it easy to plan your stay. However, you can also book chalets nearby, which are often more affordable.

When you arrive at the resort, you can use the on-site amenities, including ski equipment rental, dining, and Apres-ski scenes.

Some established resorts will also offer excursions and other experiences to book. For example, dog sledding, toboggan runs, and snowshoeing are popular activities during a ski holiday.

What’s Typically Included When You Book A Ski Holiday?

Ski holidays are flexible, with some being package deals and others being tailored for you. If you’re travelling with your family, a large group, or you want complete convenience, package skiing holidays usually include:

  • Flights or transport to the nearest airport and transfers to the ski resort.
  • Accommodation, which may include breakfast, depending on your preferences. You can also find all-inclusive skiing holidays that cover all food and drinks.
  • Lift passes can be added to your price. When you book early, you may also get a discount rather than waiting to secure a lift pass upon arrival.
  • Equipment hire options may be included, but it really depends on your package and the resort. Some charge extra.
  • Ski lessons are usually extras, but booking a package holiday might include one or two lessons.

The things that aren’t normally included are travel insurance, clothing, and dining out.

Typical Costs

It’s important to remember that when you book in advance, you can access some excellent skiing holiday deals. Plus, some resorts are cheaper than others - especially those in Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Andorra.

Here are the average costs of ski holidays:

Trip Type

Average Cost Per Person

Budget Ski Holidays (Self Catering)

£600 to £900

Mid-Range Holidays (Half Board)

£1,000 to £1,800

Luxury Skiing Holidays (Catered Chalets)

£2,500 and Over

Aside from the resort and accommodation you choose, these factors also influence the price:

  • Season: School holidays and December are the most expensive times to book due to high demand.
  • Lift Passes: You can expect to spend around £200-£350 for a week’s ski pass.
  • Equipment: Bridging your own equipment can save money, but it also means that you’ll have to pay extra for luggage if necessary.
  • Lessons: Group lessons can cost up to £300, but private lessons are more expensive.
