It’s safe to say that we have had a bit of a slow start in relation to snow in Europe this winter, but no fear! The El Niño effect is here, and is undoubtedly getting Europe up and running this ski season with amazing snow and, as a result, more-than-respectable snow depths.

So let’s find out more about the El Niño effect and what a difference it will make to this season’s skiing…
What is the El Niño effect?
The El Niño effect is, ultimately, a weather system that results in huge snowfalls in Europe and North America.
Taking a look in more depth (for those that want to know more about where we’re getting this incredible snow!), El Niño is a climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean that has an effect on the weather across the globe.
The El Niño effect begins when warm water in the west of the Pacific Ocean moves east, towards the South American coast. The El Niño effect occurs when the Pacific Ocean’s warmest waters are located offshore of north western South America.
Although it can’t always be accurately predicted, the El Niño effect tends to make Northern Europe much colder and, consequently, there is more snowfall. And this year? Colder it is! What great news for us seasoned skiers! It is now time to book our ski holiday for optimum snow and optimum skiing!
Where should we ski?
Okay, so the amount of snow has increased all over Europe, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to book any Snowfinder’s location for a ski holiday this season. That said, at Snowfinders, we just had to give a special mention to the Val d’Isere resort in France.
