Whether you want to hone your ski skills or share the skiing experience with a loved one, check out the following countries where you can ski during the late season.
While it’s true that most ski resorts wind down their ski season by the end of March to mid-April, the following selection of ski resorts stay open in May.
“Fact: There are only around 50 resorts still open early May.”
While the opportunity to ski in May can be sparse, if you still haven’t had a big enough ski hit this season, there is still time! Check out the following guide to countries where you can ski during the late season.
Austria
Hintertux
Hintertux is one of the only two ski resorts that is open 365 days a year and is notable for its fast and modern lift system that can transport a lot of skiers.
What’s more, there’s no need to be worried about the area of skiing available for you to get your teeth into as there is usually 40km to 65km of pisted runs open in Hintertux in May.
Switzerland
Zermatt
Zermatt is a hugely popular ski resort during the high season and is loved for all the same reasons during the late season.
The second of the two ski resorts open 365 days a year, the great thing is it is snow-sure from May-May! This is because the resort is so high it always has access to some snow at some point. When fresh snow falls, there is, of course, more snow at lower points of the resort.
Zermatt features one of Europe’s highest ski lifts, the Klein Matterhorn, and provides access to skiers to ski over the border to Cervinia up until the second week in May.
France
Tignes
Tignes stays open well into May and generally remains open 3 months after other French resorts close. It used to open 365 days a year!
At the start of May, it can often still be possible to ski the full vertical back to the resort and, when we’ve had a good snow year (like this year!), there can be 100km of pisted runs still available.
Canada
Whistler Blackcomb
Whistler Blackcomb is, as you well know, hugely popular and, therefore, you are lucky if you get into the resort late season at all!
Open until the end of May, the resort guarantees good glacier skiing and the resort itself has usually stacked up about 10 metres of snow.
Sweden
Riksgransen
Riksgransen offers excellent snow, right up until late June and also has 24 hours of daylight during the late season!
A unique ski resort with enjoyable runs, Riksgransen will definitely offer you an exciting and memorable ski experience, you may not have had before!
California, USA
Squaw Valley
Open until mid to late May, Squaw Valley is renowned for fantastic late season skiing. Offering a reduced priced Spring skiing pass and excellent Spring après-ski scenes, Squaw Valley is definitely worth taking a trip to in May!
Mammoth
Mammoth ski resort tends to be open until at least mid-June and offers the perfect getaway for a surf-culture feel and those looking for deep powder weekend getaways.
Take a weekend trip up Mammoth mountain or soak up the sun at the resort, whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it at Mammoth!
Italy
Passo Tonale
Passo Tonale is renowned for being deep in snow and is open until late July. You’ll find an opportunity to ski whether you are expert or beginner here and, what’s more, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy Italy’s relaxed culture.
