Austria has some of Europe’s best skiing, with resorts that suit all budgets and preferences. One of the most popular resorts is Ischgl, located in Austria's Paznaun Valley, known for its excellent skiing and lively après-skii scene. But is it the right choice for your next ski adventure? Find out in this post as we explore what Ischgl offers and who it suits.
Skiing in Ischgl
One reason for this resort's popularity is its proximity to Switzerland. The Silvretta Arena links directly with Samnaun, giving skiers 239km of pistes to explore. With an average altitude of 2,872 metres, the snow is reliable and often extends into spring. With a combination of red and blue runs, we typically recommend Ischgl for intermediate and advanced skiers. While many believe Ischgl isn’t suitable for beginners, the Idalp area offers some beginner slopes just above the resort. So families can enjoy variety and give less experienced skiers the chance to try the slopes. But if you love testing your skills across challenging slopes and love uninterrupted gliding, Ischgl won't disappoint.
The Après Ski Vibes
While much of Austria has a classic, refined, understated vibe, Ischgl is unapologetically loud and full of life. Places such as Trofana Alm and Kuhstall typically start the party as early as 3 pm, making them perfect for people who enjoy socialising and big energy. But the resort also has luxury hotels with quieter bars and delicious restaurants.
Who Does Ischgl Suit?
The Ischgl ski area itself is diverse enough to cater for different types of skiers, including:
- Experienced Skiers: Intermediate and advanced skiers who enjoy expansive terrain, plenty of snow, and a healthy selection of black runs.
- Groups of Friends: Ischgl really stands out for its suitability for groups of friends. If you're looking for a lively holiday with epic entertainment, this resort delivers.
- Couples: Couples seeking skiing, fun evenings, and plenty of space to explore the slopes will love Ischgl.
However, while Ischgl has some extended ski areas suitable for beginners, it usually doesn't attract families with young children.

FAQs
Is Ischgl good for beginners?
It's best for intermediate and advanced skiers because of its advanced slopes. We usually recommend Ischgl for people with enough experience to enjoy the diversity.
Is Ischgl good for families?
If your family includes older skiers, it can work, but remember Ischgl is more of a social resort for adults, so child-friendly activities can be limited.
Is the après-ski too much for a relaxed holiday?
Not necessarily. There are quiet areas of Ischgl too, and staying in a luxury hotel or private chalet can give you the best of both worlds.
