Most skiers take to the slope simply because they love the thrill of the sport, but not many people realise just how many health benefits skiing has. From your mental to your physical well-being, there are lots of reasons why you should head for the piste on your next holiday, and here are some of the reasons you might come back from your ski holiday with a smile.

1. Skiing has been linked to happiness
A day on the slopes really can make you feel happy, but don’t take our word for it. A study carried out by Yonsei University saw 279 people hit the slopes, with 45% skiing, 40% snowboarding, and 15% doing a bit of both. The study showed that those who took part just in skiing, and focused on the sport, were the ones who came away happiest. It went on to conclude that even the occasional ski trip has a strong impact on overall happiness, which sounds like a great excuse to book a skiing holiday.

2. Being outdoors cheers you up
We all know that fresh air is good for us, and studies over the years have shown that regular fresh air boosts your immune system, decreases stress, and again boosts your happiness. Ski holidays involve lots of time outdoors among beautiful mountains, which are bound to bring a smile to anyone’s face.

3. Après-ski is good for your mental health
Whether it’s spending time with old friends or meeting new people, socialising is great for your mental health, and après-ski is a laidback, pressure-free environment where you can mingle and chat. Spending time socialising can not only stave off depression; it also helps boost your memory and can be as effective at exercising your brain as completing a crossword puzzle.

4. Exercise helps prevent depression
Those who suffer from stress, anxiety, or depression will often be prescribed regular exercise by their doctor. There are lots of reasons why exercise is good for your mental health, from the feel-good chemicals it releases in your brain, to making you feel better about yourself. Most doctors recommend 150 minutes of exercise a week, and if you go on a ski holiday, you’ll easily fit that into a day.

5. Travel is good for you
Taking up skiing is a great excuse to see more of the world, and simply visiting new countries has lots of health benefits. Studies have shown that travelling makes you more creative, a better problem solver, and less fearful. Skiing is something you can enjoy around the world, and as you get better you’ll want to explore new places and take up new challenges, allowing you to expand your horizons.

We’ve always known that skiing is a great way to cheer yourself up, but now it seems that science backs up our theory. Nothing is more fun than getting some friends together, flying to a new country, and enjoying some time on the slopes, and you’re bound to come back feeling refreshed.
