Taking a Skiing Trip to France
French Ski Resorts & Information
>> View Ski Resorts in France
France is the main choice for Brits looking at ski holidays with over 30% of us skiers opting for the Gallic slopes each year.
The resorts vary tremendously with charming Alpine villages such as Les Gets, St Martin be Belleville, Les Carroz, Megeve, La Clusaz , Morzine, etc. Most of these villages are in the more northern area of the French Alps and so allow easy access if driving from the UK with resorts being a mere 7-8 hours from Calais. These villages will attract a large family market keen to experience not just a French ski resort but also the French way of life in the mountains. They offer charm, tradition, scenery, and a slightly more relaxed and friendly “bienvenu”.
In contrast to these resorts the big pullers for the British market are the large purpose built high altitude mega resorts such as Tignes, Les Arcs, Val Thorens, Alpe d’Huez, Les Deux Alpes, Val d’Isere, La Plagne, Courchevel, Avoriaz, etc. These resorts offer the skier the ultimate in the ski sensation. Here you can experience longevity of season, snow reliability, the world’s largest ski areas, some of the greatest vertical skiing in the world, fantastic lift systems, superb piste maintenance, wonderful and challenging off-piste, ski convenience, and pistes for everyone from beginners to experts. What some of these resorts lack in charm they make up for in the skiing statistics.
The French ski resorts also benefit from the abundance of ski catered chalets and ski chalet hotels, both being a British concept. These have transformed the way us Brits take our skiing holiday and overall have led to more affordable holidays which in turn has resulted in the boom in the UK ski industry. In addition to the catered ski chalets France benefits from a huge amount of self-catering ski apartments. Many of these are within the budget range, however, more recently there has been a rising demand for 4 and 5 star ski apartments that has led to many being built with facilities such as hot tubs, swimming pools, concierge services, spa treatments, etc.
There also exists a great range of ski hotels from small pensions to 5 star prestige hotels in most resorts. The food in France is, needless to say, of maybe the highest standard amongst the World’s ski destinations. The French are passionate about the quality of local produce as well as the chef’s abilities and imagination. Fantastic restaurants can be located in every single ski village and on every ski mountain.
Overall French resorts are not renowned for nightlife, the French themselves don’t really après ski in the same manner as us Northern Europeans. Having said that, just visit Val d’Isere, Chamonix, or Les Deux Alpes on any evening and you will find bars rammed with revellers only too keen on spoiling their next day’s skiing experience.
Snow Finders expert ski consultants have a fantastic knowledge of the French ski resorts so please feel free to call one of them at your convenience for an informal discussion and advice.
