Skiing in Austria

Austria could quite probably be called the home to Alpine skiing and is still hugely popular with us British skiers with many visiting year after year.

Austrian resorts tend to be very different to France with pretty little valley villages centred around onion domed churches. A pleasant change from the large, high, French “Ski Factory” type of resort.

The Austrian ski holiday experience is made up of pretty villages, buzzing après ski and friendly locals.
Many resorts such as Kitzbuhel, Soll, Ellmau, Saalbach and Mayrhofen are located at pretty moderate altitudes and can sometimes be unreliable for early and late season snow. There are exceptions to this rule with St Anton, Ischgl, Solden, Obergurgl, Lech and Obertauern offering reliable conditions for most of the season. Many Austrian ski holiday resorts have invested heavily in state of the art snow making equipment. Although recent seasons have seen excellent natural snow even in low altitude resorts. One of the many reasons people take their skiing holiday in Austria is the wonderful traditional après ski scene which starts mid afternoon and goes on well into the small hours. Copious amounts of Beer and Schnapps are drunk coupled with drinking songs, loud Europop and dancing on tables, bars and even the dance floor! First timers to Austria will find it very different to the French model where the après ski tends to centre around the Brits, and is tame in comparison.

There is a good mix of accommodation with many hotels in all resorts from the truly luxurious to the value for money small pension type hotel. Austria has very few self catered accommodations although they can be found in a few resorts. The catered chalets in Austria are mainly in the resort of St Anton which is hugely popular with British skiers.

Overall the Austrian ski experience is sure to please the British skier whether it is you first ever ski holiday or you are an expert off piste skier looking for adventure and thrills.
