Overview

Saalbach is a traditional attractive Austrian village & 2.5 miles along the valley is Hinterglemm, which has a more varied architectural style. Depending on where you stay both resorts can offer convenient accommodation with great access to the skiing. The resorts will appeal greatly to intermediates with the slopes providing a circuit and an effective lift system to get you around. Being mainly made up of red & blue runs expert skiers won’t find many challenges but if the snow conditions are favourable, the off-piste is good & uncrowded. The nursery slopes in Saalbach are next to the centre of the village & Hinterglemm’s area for beginners is spacious & away from the main slopes. With few flat areas and mainly chair lifts the resort is ideal for boarders and suitable for all capabilities.

Positive

  • Large intermediate ski area
  • Good lift system
  • Lively village mainly traffic free

Negative

  • Snow conditions affected by sunny slopes
  • Not much expert skiing
  • Sprawling village centres

Offslope/apres ski

Known for their lively après ski, neither resort is for those looking for a quiet holiday. By the end of the afternoon most bars are busy & the entertainment continues on into the night. Most of the accommodation is in hotels offering full catering so there are not a lot of eateries but those there offer good value & variety. Beyond skiing the resorts offer little to do and the shops are mainly those selling winter sports equipment or supermarkets.
