Overview

Although being part of the Zell am See ski area, Kaprun is a lovely, pretty village that has a good ski area immediately around it and has quick access up to the glacier. There is quick access up to the glacier in a two stage gondola and once up, the main slopes are in a big bowl with plenty of t-bars and chair lifts. There is some excellent off piste that will challenge the experts but very few challenges on the piste. Intermediates will enjoy the gentle cruising blues and reds but some slopes can get crowded. The beginner slopes are immediately around the village and then they can progress up to the gentle blues on the glacier. There is a good selection of ski schools and an excellent kindergarten in the village. Access to Zell am See is on the bus which can get crowded, but once there there are some nice intermediate slopes and a very pretty lakeside resort too.

Positive

  • Charming and lively village
  • Glacier skiing
  • Varied terrain
  • Family friendly

Negative

  • Sunny low lying slopes
  • Less suitable for beginners
  • Can be some lengthy queues

Offslope/apres ski

There are a couple of good mountain restaurants but après ski and night life in Kaprun is limited. For those who don’t ski, there is a nice leisure centre and trips can be made to Zell am see but it is quite quiet.
